Growing interest has been shown in recent years in the study of comparative administration. In this work the entire field of public administration in France is dealt with, covering among other things, the organisation of the cabinet, the structure and functions of government departments and of local authorities, the civil service, the police, the judiciary and public enterprise. Chapters dealing with economic planning, the administration of social services and of the educational system may also be of interest to specialists in these fields.
The authors try to explain the spirit as well as the mechanism of the French administrative system, the principles that underlie it and the wider background against which it is set. They do not suggest that we in this country can simply import bits of the French system, but they do hope to contribute to our knowledge of alternative methods of organisation, as well as to our knowledge of France itself.
