In both diversity and quality, the architecture of present-day Japan can be classed as foremost in the world. This has not always been the case. Due to favourable economic circumstances and the coexistence of two generations of architects, it achieved a breakthrough on the international scene during the 80's. This pluralistic architectural landscape, influenced by both tradition and a process of constant renewal, has a great many surprises in store for the Western eye.
